چکیده

The problem of drug resistance has become an important limiting factor in the therapeutic efficiency of streptomycin (Buggs et al., 1946; Finland et al., 1946; Bondi et al., 1946). We have previously shown in the case of streptomycin that of 13 strains tested all had the ability to throw off, spontaneously, variants resistant to streptomycin (Klein and Kimmelman, 1946; Klein, 1947). The destruction by streptomycin of the mass of susceptible bacteria and the multiplication of the fe.w highly resistant variants was indicated to be a mechanism for the development of streptomycin resistance. Alexander and Leidy (1947), working with Hemophilus influertae, have recently obtained similar results. Clinically, the inhibition of the rapid development of streptomycin resistance may then require the destruction of a relatively small number of resistant bacteria, which might be effected by the addition of a low concentration of another drug. In the present work we have therefore studied the combined action of streptomycin, penicillin, and sulfadiazine in vitro and determined the relationship between the synergistic action of the compounds and the inhibition of the development of streptomycin resistance.

Synergistic Effect of Silver Nanoparticles and Streptomycin Antibiotic on the MexX Gene Expression of Pump Efflux System in Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa Strains

Introduction: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important infectious agents in humans, which is difficult to control in hospitals due to its resistance to various antibiotics. Efflux pump systems play an important role in the drug resistance of this bacterium to a variety of antibiotics. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial synergistic effect of silver nanoparticles and the a...

Aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes in clinical isolates of Streptococcus faecalis. An explanation for resistance to antibiotic synergism.

Clinical isolates of enterococci (Streptococcus faecalis) with high-level resistance to both streptomycin and kanamycin (minimal inhibitory concentration >2,000 mug/ml), and resistant to synergism with penicillin and streptomycin or kanamycin were examined for aminoglycoside-inactivating enzymes. All of the 10 strains studied had streptomycin adenylyltransferase and neomycin phosphotransferase ...

Effect of Anti-Microbial Fiber and its Interaction with Penicillin G on Opportunistic Skin Micro-Flora

Objective The standard of hygiene in daily life and hospitals can be increased by the use of new antimicrobial fibers, which diminish the danger of pathogenic bacteria. In this study, the antimicrobial effect of special fibers on some staphylococcus isolates was investigated. Materials and Methods The antimicrobial effect of special type of fibers produced in Isfahan Poly Acryl Plant on thre...

Mechanism of resistance to antibiotic synergism in enterococci.

Enterococci exhibit two types of resistance to streptomycin. Moderately high-level resistance is observed in most naturally occurring strains and can be overcome by simultaneous exposure to penicillin. In addition, very high-level resistance is found in those strains against which penicillin plus streptomycin fail to produce synergism in vitro. To study the mechanism of streptomycin resistance ...

Evaluation of synergism between the aminoglycoside antibiotic streptomycin and the cardiovascular agent amlodipine.

Amlodipine, a cardiovascular drug, exhibited remarkable antibacterial action in vitro against 504 bacterial strains belonging to both Gram positive and Gram negative genera, as well as in vivo against a mouse-virulent bacterium. Based on such findings, the present study was undertaken to determine whether the efficacy of this non-antibiotic drug could be enhanced in the presence of any antibiot...
